My Love/Hate Relationship With Social Media

In this day and age, most of us are signed up to social media of some type. Whether it’s scrolling through people’s instagrams, reading their tweets or reading their blogs, it has become the norm now for everyone to be attached to a screen. As a blogger, social media is a big part of my traffic generation and engagement with others. It has become more popular than ever to be online, but is it all positive? Grab a cuppa, and let’s get down to business…

Some of the best people I know are from the blogging community

For me, since I started blogging I have made so many amazing friends and connections. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people, and it really puts the ‘social’ in social media. Bloggers need this kind of interaction to ensure their content is seen and heard (and to make brilliant friends of course)! Of course as the internet is a free to use global platform, it means you are also exposed to some less desirable attention. The online world can be a scary place sometimes, and not always one that I want to be a part of.

As a psychologist, the effects of social media interest me

There is a consistent pressure to be liked, followed and shown appreciation online, even if it’s from strangers. To some, this form of respect is desired more than being liked by those in your real life. To me, this is a real issue. Valuing a stranger’s ‘like’ on your photo over your real friend’s opinions of you seems wrong. These superficial things are not what people will remember about you. You are more than how many likes you got on your recent Facebook profile picture.

Having said all that, the online world has revolutionised the way we keep in touch with people. You could be halfway across the world having a video chat to someone back home, it really is pretty amazing. From this point of view, the growth in social media use has been an extraordinary addition to our lives, but I think it has all got blown a little out of proportion.

The amount of stress and anxiety it causes is a real concern for our current generation. The ability to post content anonymously gives people power, and the ability to say things they probably wouldn’t say to your face. I know too many people who have been cyber bullied, pressured to send revealing photos or just harassed by strangers, it’s a worry! Sometimes people forget that their privacy can be seriously compromised online, and people can access your details that you perhaps wouldn’t want to. Read Jemma’s steps for surviving the online world from, it’s a fantastic and helpful read.

Situations can be blown out of proportion

As shown in recent Twitter events, posts on the internet can be taken the wrong way and cause excessive drama. Words are powerful, and posting the wrong ones online can have consequences. Sometimes the message may not have been intended to be negative, but the readers may interpret it incorrectly.

social media apps

Social media platforms 100% have the power to be a positive and supportive space, if used correctly. It’s a way to interact, engage and learn. But I believe that people just need to remember the important things in life, and not get caught up in more trivial matters. Don’t let social media control you, take a break if you need it! It can be a wonderful place, but treat others with respect and in turn, they should do the same.

Let me know what you think about this! I would love to know your opinions. Have a great Easter!
