The 5 Best Tips and Products for Acne Prone and Oily Skin

I have struggled with oily skin for as long as I can remember. It has cost me hundreds of pounds in skincare, constant acne struggles, and a lot of misery with my appearance. Does any of this sound familiar to you? If you have acne prone/oily skin, then I expect that was a yes.

I haven’t completely cleared my skin up, I’m not sure if I will ever have ‘normal skin’. However, there are definitely some improvements I’ve made that have really made the difference!

#1 Your Skincare Routine

I can’t even begin to emphasise how important it is to look after your skin. You’re stuck with it your whole life, so take care of it! I have had to experiment with my regime so much to try and find products that work for me. I still change up my routine every now and again to see if I can find that miracle worker, (alas, no skin fairy godmother has come to my rescue yet) but I have a fairly solid regime in place. Here is a low down on my current skincare routine:

A little disclaimer: these are my personal choices and what has worked for my skin. Everybody’s skin is different so I can’t guarantee results for you too!

#2 Makeup for oily skin

Finding cosmetics that agree with my difficult skin is a tough one. As well as being oily and acne prone, I have fairly sensitive skin. This means I have to avoid any harsh products on my skin. The most difficult product to get my skin to comply with is foundation. They’re either too cakey, too low coverage, or the product starts to ‘crack’ during the day due to oiliness. Ahh! What a nightmare. Finally I found a foundation that works for me. It’s the Makeup Forever Matt Velvet foundation. I love it! It doesn’t make me break out and lasts all day, result! Here are a few more makeup suggestions for my oily skinned gals out there:

#3 Exercise

There are so many false claims about the benefits of exercise for your skin. I joined the gym around 6 months ago, and I actually noticed an improvement in my skin’s appearance and a reduced amount of oil. As I’ve now left uni for the summer, I don’t have a gym close to me and I’ve noticed a slight deterioration in my skin. Either way, it did actually help. Just ensure you care for your skin properly post-exercising to prevent breakouts. Read my post on that here.

#4 Relax and destress

During times of stress and anxiety, I always see a decrease in my skin’s quality, and my acne pops up to say hello. In the pas few years, I have begun to practise relaxation techniques such as yoga and breathing exercises. This has dramatically improved both my mental health and skin health. If you are feeling a little stressed, I recommend using Yoga with Adriene on Youtube.

#5 Washing your makeup brushes, face towels and bedding regularly

This is something I have found incredibly helpful for keeping my skin spot free. I wash my bedding and face towels once a week, and try to do the same for my makeup brushes (I really need to get better at that!). The dirt and oil that sits on all these regularly used items is a breeding ground for acne and increased oil on your skin. If you do one thing this week to help your oily skin, make it this!

I hope this post has helped some of you who may struggle with their skin like I do. If it helped, please share and leave a comment!

Lots of love,
